History:
Jules Wiese was born in 1818 in Berlin, where he trained as a goldsmith and jeweler with the supplier of the King of Prussia, Johann George Hossauer, from 1834.
He moved to Paris in 1839, where he began working for the goldsmith-jeweler specializing in silver work, Jean-Valentin Morel. He then joined the workshop of the famous goldsmith and jeweler François-Désiré Froment-Meurice. In 1844, he created his own workshop with twenty-five workers under his command.
In 1855, he received the « first class » medal in goldsmithing, jewelry and jewelry at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
He mostly sculpted gold jewelry, his favorite material being 22-carat gold, which he often adorned with enamel or precious and fine stones for which he used ancient setting methods.
The entry of the Marquis Campana collection into the Louvre inspired him to create jewelry in the aesthetics of Antiquity. In 1867, this production earned him a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
Jules Wiese retired in favor of his son, Louis Wiese (1852-1923), from 1880, ten years before his death in 1890. Louis Wiese kept his father’s workshop in operation until his death in 1923. Thus, Louis Wiese perpetuated the family legacy and, while he continued to produce jewelry in the continuity of his father’s style, he also managed to introduce his personal taste into his works. He was, according to the famous jeweler Vever, « an exceptionally modest and truly talented artist, » who was able to perpetuate the quality and originality of the house created by his father.
